About the boat

Sail Komodo on New IJC

New IJC is a 22-metre deluxe phinisi sailing from Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on 3 day 2 night sharing trips. It has five air-conditioned cabins with an ocean view, each with a private bathroom, for up to fourteen guests.

The master cabin on the upper deck has a queen bed for two. The two private cabins on the main deck each have a queen bed and a single bed for up to three guests, and the two sharing cabins on the main deck each sleep four in two queen beds and are sold by the bed.

Guests share a covered deck with a wooden dining table, an indoor dining area and a side deck with a net at the bow, with snorkelling gear and water sports for the water. A speedboat with a 15 hp engine takes guests ashore.

The first day walks on Kelor Island, snorkels at Manjarite and ends with the sunset at Kalong Island. The second climbs Padar Island early in the morning, then visits the Pink Beach, the Komodo dragons on Komodo Island, Taka Makassar and Manta Point. The last morning snorkels at Siaba or Sebayur Island before New IJC is back in Labuan Bajo at about 12:00.

Most weeks have departures on Friday and Monday. Book a cabin on a scheduled sharing trip and share the boat with other guests. Before you go, check the Komodo National Park fees and read how booking works.

A Mitsubishi four-cylinder PS125 engine and a Jiangdong 300 move New IJC at an average of eight to eleven knots, a dynamo and an 8,800-watt generator supply the power on board, the tanks hold 4,500 litres of fresh water, and a speedboat with a 15 hp engine takes the guests ashore.

  • Length 22 m, width 3.8 m
  • Up to 14 guests in 5 cabins, each with air conditioning, a private bathroom and an ocean view
  • One cabin on the upper deck and four on the main deck
  • Home port: Labuan Bajo, Flores
Why choose New IJC

New IJC is a simple, friendly way to see Komodo in comfort. Every cabin has air conditioning, a private bathroom and an ocean view, and with only fourteen guests on board there is always a quiet corner on deck.

The covered deck has a long wooden table for meals with a view, the indoor dining area has cushioned benches, and the net at the bow is a place to lie above the water between the stops. The two sharing cabins keep the price of a place low, so New IJC suits travellers who want a deluxe trip without a luxury price.

The cabins on New IJC

All five cabins on New IJC have air conditioning, a private bathroom and an ocean view. One is on the upper deck and four are on the main deck.

Master Cabin. On the upper deck, with a queen bed for two guests and windows on the sea.

Private Cabins. Two cabins on the main deck, each with a queen bed and a single bed, for two guests or three with the single bed at the extra-bed price.

Sharing Cabins. Two cabins on the main deck, each with two queen beds for four guests, sold by the bed, from two places per booking.

The master and private cabins are booked by at least two guests. Prices are per person and depend on the cabin; the cabin cards on this page show the current prices, and the booking form shows which cabins and beds are still free on each departure.

Who New IJC suits

Couples. The master cabin on the upper deck, with its queen bed and sea view, is the quietest cabin on board.

Families. The two private cabins take a third guest on the single bed, and a family of four can book all the beds of a sharing cabin.

Friends travelling in pairs. The sharing cabins sell places by the bed, from two places per booking, a good way to sail on New IJC for less.

Groups. With space for fourteen guests, a group can fill New IJC on one departure. Travellers on their own should choose a boat that sells a single bed, as every booking on New IJC is for at least two guests.

Day by day on the 3 day 2 night trip

Day 1. Pick-up at the airport or your hotel in Labuan Bajo between 8:00 and 10:00, then New IJC sets sail and lunch is served on board. The afternoon brings a walk on Kelor Island and snorkelling at Manjarite, and the day ends with the sunset and the flying foxes at Kalong Island, followed by dinner.

Day 2. An early climb on Padar Island before breakfast, for the view over its bays. Then the Pink Beach for snorkelling and sunbathing, the walk on Komodo Island to see the dragons, lunch on board, Taka Makassar for snorkelling and sunbathing on the sandbank, Manta Point in the afternoon and dinner on board.

Day 3. After breakfast, a last snorkel at Siaba or Sebayur Island and lunch on board. New IJC is back in Labuan Bajo at about 12:00, and the drop-off at the airport or your hotel is at about 13:00.

The order of the stops can change with the weather and the tides, and the crew chooses the best moment for each visit.

The highlights of the route

Padar Island. The thirty-minute climb ends at a viewpoint over three bays with white, black and pink sand, one of the most famous views in Indonesia.

Komodo Island. The home of the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on earth. Park rangers lead every walk and know where the dragons rest.

Pink Beach. The sand is pink from tiny red sea creatures mixed with the white grains, and the reef in front of the beach is good for snorkelling.

Taka Makassar and Manta Point. A sandbank in turquoise water, and a channel where manta rays gather to feed.

Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong and Siaba. Kelor has a short climb to a view over the islands, Manjarite has calm water and coral close to the surface, at Kalong thousands of flying foxes leave the mangroves at dusk, and Siaba or Sebayur gives a last swim before New IJC sails back to Labuan Bajo.

Life on board New IJC

Meals are cooked on board: breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an afternoon snack and juices, and mineral water, coffee and tea.

The covered deck at the back has a long wooden table in the shade, the indoor dining area has cushioned benches, and the side decks lead to the net at the bow. At night New IJC lies at anchor in a calm bay, a good time to watch the stars.

A tour guide joins every sharing trip, and the crew records the highlights with a camera, a drone and a GoPro, so the photos and videos of your days on New IJC come home with you.

Snorkelling and water sports

Snorkelling gear with fins, mask, snorkel and life jacket is included for every guest, and there are snorkelling stops every day: Manjarite, the Pink Beach, Taka Makassar, Manta Point and Siaba or Sebayur.

Water sports are part of every sharing trip on New IJC, and the speedboat with a 15 hp engine takes the guests from the boat to the beaches and the reefs.

The boat, the engine and safety

New IJC is a wooden phinisi built in the traditional style of Sulawesi. A Mitsubishi four-cylinder PS125 engine and a Jiangdong 300 move it at eight to eleven knots, and a dynamo and an 8,800-watt generator supply the power on board.

The crew navigates with GPS and AIS and keeps in touch by radio and VHF radio. On board there are a life raft, 23 life jackets and two lifebuoys.

Sharing trip or private charter

On a sharing trip you book a cabin, or places in a sharing cabin, on a scheduled departure and share New IJC with other guests. Each trip lasts three days and two nights, and the price is per person.

New IJC can also be chartered as a private boat for your own group. The charter price depends on the dates, the length of the trip and the number of guests, so ask us for a quote.

About Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park spans the islands between Sumbawa and Flores. It was founded in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The currents between the islands feed some of the richest reefs in Indonesia, with turtles, reef fish and manta rays.

Walks among the dragons are always led by park rangers, and every visitor pays the park entrance fee, which is added to the invoice of every New IJC trip.

When to sail with New IJC

The dry season, from about April to November, brings calm seas, clear water and sunny days, and it is the busiest time in the park. December and March are quieter, with short tropical showers and green islands.

New IJC sails 3 day 2 night trips from Friday to Sunday and, in most weeks, from Monday to Wednesday. There are no sharing departures in January and February. The departure list on this page follows the operator's own schedule and shows every date that is still open.

Getting to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo, on the west coast of Flores, has its own airport, Komodo Airport (LBJ), with direct flights from Bali and Jakarta. The pick-up for New IJC is at the airport or at your hotel in Labuan Bajo between 8:00 and 10:00, so it is easiest to arrive the day before or on an early flight.

On the last day the boat is back at about 12:00 and the drop-off is at about 13:00, so a late afternoon flight is usually possible. Many guests add a night in Labuan Bajo before or after the trip.

Tips for your trip on New IJC

Pack light and bring a soft bag, which is easier to store in a cabin than a hard suitcase. Bring swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen, sandals for the boat and closed shoes for the walks on Padar and Komodo.

The sun is strong on the water, so drink plenty and rest in the shade of the covered deck. If you are sensitive to motion, bring your own remedy; the sea in the park is usually calm, but some crossings can be choppy. Some cash in rupiah is handy for tips and small purchases in Labuan Bajo.

Booking, payment and park fees

You can book New IJC online: choose a departure, pick your cabins or places and send the booking request. We check it and email your invoice within 24 hours. A 50% deposit is due within 72 hours of the invoice and the balance 60 days before the trip; bookings made less than 60 days ahead are paid in full. The payment policy and the cancellation policy give the details.

Every New IJC sharing trip includes:

  • Transfers between the airport or your hotel and the boat
  • Three meals a day, mineral water, coffee, tea, an afternoon snack and juices
  • Shore excursions with a tour guide
  • Snorkelling gear, snorkelling and water sports
  • Photos and videos by camera, drone and GoPro

The Komodo National Park entrance fee is paid per person per trip, at one rate for foreign guests and a lower rate for Indonesian citizens, and it is added to the invoice. Flights, hotels, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks and tips for the crew and guide are not included.
