The remote Spice Islands of Maluku, by boat
The Banda Islands are a small group of volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, in Maluku in eastern Indonesia. They were the original source of nutmeg and mace, and that spice trade shaped the history of the islands and of much of the region. Today they are remote and quiet, with old forts and colonial buildings in Banda Neira and the volcano Gunung Api rising from the sea beside it.
Getting here takes planning. Most visitors fly to Ambon and continue by small plane or boat to Banda Neira, and many travelers choose to see the islands by boat, which makes it possible to visit places that are hard to reach otherwise. Conditions in the Banda Sea change with the season, so dates matter.
Send an inquiry with your dates and group size and we will tell you what boats and routes are available for the Banda Islands.
