About the boat

Sail Komodo on Amore Phinisi

Amore Phinisi is a 26-metre deluxe phinisi built in 2019, sailing from Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on 3 day 2 night sharing trips. It has six air-conditioned cabins with an ocean view, each with a private bathroom, for up to seventeen guests.

Two master cabins, one on the upper deck and one on the main deck, and two private cabins, again one on each deck, each have a queen bed for two. Two sharing cabins on the main deck are sold by the bed: one for three guests with a double bed and a single bed, and one for four with two double beds.

Guests share a cushioned lounge with bean bags on the foredeck, a shaded deck lounge, a dining table on deck and an indoor lounge with a TV, with snorkelling gear and water sports for the water. A crew of six looks after the trip.

The first day walks on Kelor Island, snorkels at Manjarite and ends with the sunset at Kalong Island. The second climbs Padar Island early in the morning, then visits the Pink Beach, the Komodo dragons on Komodo Island, Taka Makassar and Manta Point. The last morning snorkels at Siaba or Sebayur Island before Amore Phinisi is back in Labuan Bajo at about 12:00.

Most weeks have departures on Friday and Monday. Book a cabin on a scheduled sharing trip and share the boat with other guests. Before you go, check the Komodo National Park fees and read how booking works.

Amore Phinisi at a glance

Amore Phinisi is a wooden phinisi of 26.5 metres with a beam of 5 metres, built in 2019. It has six air-conditioned cabins with an ocean view for up to seventeen guests, and a crew of six looks after the trip.

A Mitsubishi 6D14 engine moves Amore Phinisi between the islands, the tanks hold 3,000 litres of fresh water, and a fibreglass speedboat takes the guests to the beaches and the reefs.

  • Length 26.5 m, beam 5 m, built in 2019
  • Up to 17 guests in 6 cabins, each with air conditioning, a private bathroom and an ocean view
  • Two cabins on the upper deck and four on the main deck
  • Home port: Labuan Bajo, Flores
Why choose Amore Phinisi

Amore is Italian for love, and Amore Phinisi is a warm, easy-going boat for a first trip to Komodo. Every cabin has an ocean view, air conditioning and a private bathroom, and the shared cabins keep the price of a place low.

The decks are made for slow hours between the stops: teal bean bags and a round rug on the foredeck, a shaded lounge with sofas, and a dining table on deck where lunch is served with fresh fruit and juice. For a small group of friends, Amore Phinisi feels like a boat of your own.

The cabins on Amore Phinisi

All six cabins on Amore Phinisi have air conditioning, a private bathroom and an ocean view. Two are on the upper deck and four on the main deck.

Master Cabins. Two master cabins, one on the upper deck and one on the main deck, each with a queen bed for two guests.

Private Cabins. Two private cabins, again one on the upper deck and one on the main deck, each with a queen bed for two guests.

Sharing Cabin 3. On the main deck, with a double bed and a single bed for three guests, sold by the bed.

Sharing Cabin 4. On the main deck, with two double beds for four guests, sold by the bed.

The master and private cabins are booked by two guests, and the sharing cabins by at least two places per booking. Prices are per person and depend on the cabin; the cabin cards on this page show the current prices, and the booking form shows which cabins and beds are still free on each departure.

Who Amore Phinisi suits

Couples. The master and private cabins each have a queen bed and an ocean view, a good choice for two at a fair price.

Friends travelling in pairs. The sharing cabins sell places by the bed, from two places per booking, so two friends can share a cabin with other guests.

Families. A family can book two cabins side by side, or all four beds of Sharing Cabin 4.

Groups. With space for up to seventeen guests, a group can fill Amore Phinisi on one departure. Travellers on their own should choose a boat that sells a single bed, as every booking on Amore Phinisi is for at least two guests.

Day by day on the 3 day 2 night trip

Day 1. Pick-up at the airport or your hotel in Labuan Bajo between 8:00 and 10:00, then Amore Phinisi sets sail and lunch is served on board. The afternoon brings a walk on Kelor Island and snorkelling at Manjarite, and the day ends with the sunset and the flying foxes at Kalong Island, followed by dinner.

Day 2. An early climb on Padar Island before breakfast, for the view over its bays. Then the Pink Beach for snorkelling and sunbathing, the walk on Komodo Island to see the dragons, lunch on board, Taka Makassar for snorkelling and sunbathing on the sandbank, Manta Point in the afternoon and dinner on board.

Day 3. After breakfast, a last snorkel at Siaba or Sebayur Island and lunch on board. Amore Phinisi is back in Labuan Bajo at about 12:00, and the drop-off at the airport or your hotel is at about 13:00.

The order of the stops can change with the weather and the tides, and the crew chooses the best moment for each visit.

The highlights of the route

Padar Island. The climb to the viewpoint takes about thirty minutes and ends above three bays with beaches of white, black and pink sand.

Komodo Island. The home of the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard in the world. Every walk is led by park rangers, who know where the dragons rest.

Pink Beach. Tiny red sea creatures mixed with the white sand give the beach its colour, and the reef in front of it is good for snorkelling.

Taka Makassar and Manta Point. A sandbank in turquoise water, and a channel where manta rays come to feed and to be cleaned.

Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong and Siaba. Kelor has a small hill with a view over the islands, Manjarite has calm water and shallow coral, at Kalong thousands of flying foxes leave the mangroves at dusk, and Siaba or Sebayur gives a last swim before Amore Phinisi heads back to Labuan Bajo.

Life on board Amore Phinisi

Meals are cooked on board: breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an afternoon snack and juices, and mineral water, coffee and tea. Lunch is often laid out on the dining table on deck, with fresh fruit and juice.

The foredeck has teal bean bags and cushions on a round rug, the covered lounge has sofas, cushions and a guitar, and the indoor lounge has a TV. At night Amore Phinisi lies at anchor in a quiet bay under the stars.

A tour guide joins every sharing trip, and the crew records the highlights with a camera, a drone and a GoPro, so the photos and videos of your days on Amore Phinisi come home with you.

Snorkelling and water sports

Snorkelling gear with fins, mask, snorkel and life jacket is included for every guest, and there are snorkelling stops every day: Manjarite, the Pink Beach, Taka Makassar, Manta Point and Siaba or Sebayur.

Water sports are part of every sharing trip on Amore Phinisi, and the fibreglass speedboat takes the guests from the boat to the beaches and the reefs.

The boat, the engine and safety

Amore Phinisi was built of wood in 2019, in the shape of the traditional phinisi of Sulawesi. Its Mitsubishi 6D14 engine moves the boat between the islands, the tanks carry 3,000 litres of fresh water, and a crew of six sails the boat, cooks the meals and looks after the guests.

The crew navigates with radar, an echo sounder, a Garmin GPS and charts, and keeps in touch by SSB radio and a satellite telephone. On board there are life jackets, a life buoy, a first aid kit and fire extinguishers.

Sharing trip or private charter

On a sharing trip you book a cabin, or places in a sharing cabin, on a scheduled departure and share Amore Phinisi with other guests. Each trip lasts three days and two nights, and the price is per person.

Amore Phinisi can also be chartered as a private boat for your own group. The charter price depends on the dates, the length of the trip and the number of guests, so ask us for a quote.

About Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park lies between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. It was set up in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Strong currents feed some of the richest reefs in Indonesia, with turtles, reef fish and manta rays.

Walks among the dragons are always led by park rangers, and every visitor pays the park entrance fee, which is added to the invoice of every Amore Phinisi trip.

When to sail with Amore Phinisi

The dry season, from about April to November, brings calm seas, clear water and sunny days, and it is the busiest time in the park. December and March are quieter, with short tropical showers and green hills.

Amore Phinisi sails 3 day 2 night trips from Friday to Sunday and, in most weeks, from Monday to Wednesday. There are no sharing departures in January and February. The departure list on this page follows the operator's own schedule and shows every date that is still open.

Getting to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo, on the west coast of Flores, has its own airport, Komodo Airport (LBJ), with direct flights from Bali and Jakarta. The pick-up for Amore Phinisi is at the airport or at your hotel in Labuan Bajo between 8:00 and 10:00, so it is easiest to arrive the day before or on an early flight.

On the last day the boat is back at about 12:00 and the drop-off is at about 13:00, so a late afternoon flight is usually possible. Many guests add a night in Labuan Bajo before or after the trip.

Tips for your trip on Amore Phinisi

Pack light and bring a soft bag, which is easier to store in a cabin than a hard suitcase. Bring swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen, sandals for the boat and closed shoes for the walks on Padar and Komodo.

The sun is strong on the water, so drink plenty and rest in the shade of the covered lounge. If you are sensitive to motion, bring your own remedy; the sea in the park is usually calm, but some crossings can be choppy. Some cash in rupiah is handy for tips and small purchases in Labuan Bajo.

Booking, payment and park fees

You can book Amore Phinisi online: choose a departure, pick your cabins or places and send the booking request. We check it and email your invoice within 24 hours. A 50% deposit is due within 72 hours of the invoice and the balance 60 days before the trip; bookings made less than 60 days ahead are paid in full. The payment policy and the cancellation policy give the details.

Every Amore Phinisi sharing trip includes:

  • Transfers between the airport or your hotel and the boat
  • Three meals a day, mineral water, coffee, tea, an afternoon snack and juices
  • Shore excursions with a tour guide
  • Snorkelling gear, snorkelling and water sports
  • Photos and videos by camera, drone and GoPro

The Komodo National Park entrance fee is paid per person per trip, at one rate for foreign guests and a lower rate for Indonesian citizens, and it is added to the invoice. Flights, hotels, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks and tips for the crew and guide are not included.
