With only three cabins, Akassa is easy to charter for a family or a small group of friends. Meals, drinking water, coffee and tea, afternoon snacks, snorkelling gear, canoes and paddle boards, a guide and photo and drone documentation are included. Guide to Akassa Cruise

Akassa Cruise at a glance

Akassa Cruise is a 25-metre wooden phinisi with only three cabins, one of the most private ways to join a sharing trip from Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park. It takes up to ten guests, every cabin has air conditioning and a private bathroom, and a crew of six looks after the boat and its guests.

Sharing trips on Akassa Cruise leave every Friday for three days and two nights and return on Sunday. With so few guests on board, the trip feels more like a private cruise than a group tour, and a fibreglass speedboat takes the group to the beaches and the reefs.

  • Length 25 m, beam 4.5 m
  • Up to 10 guests in 3 cabins with private bathrooms
  • Crew of 6
  • 5 m fibreglass speedboat
  • Sharing trips every Friday, 3 days 2 nights
Sea, sky and earth

The three cabins of Akassa Cruise carry Indonesian names: Laut means sea, Langit means sky and Bumi means earth. Together they sum up a trip through Komodo, where the days are spent between the reefs, the open sky over the deck and the dry hills of the islands.

With three cabins, a sharing trip on Akassa Cruise is never crowded. Two of the cabins take up to four guests each, so a family or a group of friends can fill most of the boat on one departure, and a couple can have the Bumi cabin for themselves.

The cabins on Akassa Cruise

All three cabins on Akassa Cruise have air conditioning, a double bed and a private bathroom.

Laut Cabin. The best cabin on board is on the main deck, with a private balcony and a bathtub in its bathroom. Two extra beds make room for a third and a fourth guest.

Langit Cabin. The Langit cabin is on the upper deck, with a double bed and two extra beds for up to four guests, which suits a family or a group of friends.

Bumi Cabin. The Bumi cabin, also on the upper deck, has a double bed for two guests and offers the lowest price on Akassa Cruise.

Prices on Akassa Cruise are per person and depend on the cabin. The cabin cards on this page show the current price of every cabin, and the booking form shows which cabins are still free on each departure.

Day by day on the 3 day 2 night trip

Day 1 (Friday). Akassa Cruise picks you up at the airport or your hotel in Labuan Bajo between 8:00 and 9:30, and lunch is served once the boat sets sail. The first stop is Kelor, a small island with a short, steep trek and a wide view of the bay. Manjarite follows for the first snorkel, and the day ends at Kalong Island, where thousands of flying foxes leave the mangroves at sunset.

Day 2 (Saturday). The full day in the park begins with the trek up Padar Island before breakfast, for the view over three bays with sand of different colours. Akassa Cruise then sails to the Pink Beach for snorkelling and sunbathing and on to Komodo Island, where park rangers lead the walk to see the Komodo dragons. After lunch the boat stops at Taka Makassar, a sandbar that appears at low tide, and at Manta Point, where manta rays often feed in the current.

Day 3 (Sunday). After breakfast the last snorkel is at Siaba or Sebayur, two islands with shallow reefs; Siaba is known for its green turtles. Akassa Cruise is back in Labuan Bajo at about 12:00, and the transfer drops you at the airport or your hotel at about 13:00.

The order of the stops can change with the tides, the weather and the rules of the park. Snorkelling and treks are always optional, so guests who prefer to rest can stay on board.

The highlights of the route

Kelor Island. The first trek of the trip is short but steep, and the top of the hill looks over turquoise water and the islands around Labuan Bajo.

Padar Island. A stepped path climbs to the viewpoint in about half an hour, with a view over three bays and beaches of white, pink and black sand. Early in the morning the light is soft and the air is still cool.

Pink Beach. Microscopic red organisms called foraminifera colour the sand pink, and the reef begins a few metres from the shore.

Kalong Island. Kalong is the Indonesian word for flying fox. At dusk thousands of them rise from the mangroves and fly off to feed, a sight best watched from the deck of the boat.

A day on board Akassa Cruise

With three cabins and a crew of six, life on Akassa Cruise is calm and personal. On Saturday the group goes ashore early to climb Padar, and breakfast is served on board after the walk down. The Pink Beach and the dragon walk on Komodo Island fill the rest of the morning, and lunch is served as the boat sails on.

The afternoon belongs to the water, with Taka Makassar and Manta Point and a snack with juices in between. Dinner is served in the indoor dining area while Akassa Cruise lies at anchor, and the evening is free for the stars, a film on the TV or a song at the karaoke.

Snorkelling and water fun

Akassa Cruise stops at five snorkelling spots on the 3 day 2 night trip: Manjarite on Friday, the Pink Beach, Taka Makassar and Manta Point on Saturday, and Siaba or Sebayur on Sunday morning. Fins, masks, snorkels and life jackets are on board, and the guide accompanies the group.

The reefs are mostly shallow and easy for beginners, with reef fish at every stop, turtles around Siaba and manta rays at Manta Point when the current is right. Between the stops, the kayak, the paddle board and the floaties of Akassa Cruise are free to use around the boat.

Life on board Akassa Cruise

Three meals a day are served on board, with mineral water, coffee and tea and an afternoon snack with juices. A water dispenser with mineral water is free to use all day, so there is no need to buy bottled water for the trip.

Between the stops, guests relax on the sofas and bean bags of the lounge area, and for the evenings there is a TV with karaoke. A tour guide joins every trip, and the crew records the highlights with a camera, a drone and a GoPro.

The boat, the engine and safety

Akassa Cruise is powered by a Mitsubishi 6D16 engine and cruises at seven to eight knots. Its tanks hold 1,000 litres of fuel and 5,000 litres of fresh water, and the 5-metre fibreglass speedboat has a 15 horsepower Yamaha engine.

For navigation and safety the crew of Akassa Cruise has radar, an echo sounder, a Garmin GPS with paper charts, an SSB radio and a satellite telephone, with life jackets, life buoys, fire extinguishers and a first aid kit on board.

Sharing trip or private charter

On a sharing trip you book one or more cabins on a scheduled departure and share Akassa Cruise with other guests. Sharing trips leave every Friday for three days and two nights, and the price is per person.

On a private charter the whole of Akassa Cruise is yours, with its crew. Charters run for two days and one night, three days and two nights or four days and three nights, and the price depends on the length of the trip and the size of the group. With three cabins, Akassa Cruise is an easy boat to charter for a family or a small group of friends.

The charter tab on this page shows the charter rates for each trip length, for groups of up to ten guests. Send us your dates and we will check them with the operator.

About Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park lies between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. It was created in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on earth, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The dragons live only on Komodo, Rinca, the west of Flores and a few smaller islands.

The currents between the islands feed some of the richest reefs in Indonesia, where snorkellers meet turtles, reef fish and manta rays. Walks among the dragons are always led by park rangers, and every visitor pays the park entrance fee, which is added to the invoice of every Akassa Cruise trip.

When to sail with Akassa Cruise

The dry season, roughly from April to November, brings calm seas, clear water and golden hills, and it is the busiest time in Komodo. December and the first months of the year are wetter, with greener islands and fewer boats in the park.

Akassa Cruise has sharing departures every Friday from March to December. With only three cabins, a departure fills quickly, and the departure list on this page shows every date that is still open.

Getting to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo, on the west coast of Flores, is the gateway to Komodo National Park. Komodo Airport (LBJ) has direct flights from Bali and Jakarta, and the flight from Bali takes a little over an hour.

Akassa Cruise picks you up between 8:00 and 9:30 on Friday, so it is easiest to arrive on Thursday and spend a night in Labuan Bajo. On Sunday the transfer drops you at the airport at about 13:00, in time for an afternoon flight. The transfers between the airport or your hotel and the boat are included in the price.

Booking, payment and park fees

You can book Akassa Cruise online with live availability: choose a departure, pick your cabins and send the booking. A 50% deposit is due within 72 hours and the balance 60 days before the trip; bookings made less than 60 days ahead are paid in full. The payment policy and the cancellation policy give the details.

Every Akassa Cruise sharing trip includes:

  • Transfers between the airport or your hotel and the boat
  • Three meals a day, mineral water, coffee, tea, an afternoon snack and juices
  • Shore excursions with a tour guide
  • A canoe, a paddle board and snorkelling gear
  • Photos and videos by camera, drone and GoPro

The Komodo National Park entrance fee is paid per person per trip, at one rate for foreign guests and a lower rate for Indonesian citizens, and it is added to the invoice. Flights, hotels, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks and tips for the crew are not included.
